Our Thanksgiving Table

Yesterday I showed you my easy DIY place cards, today I want to show you my tablescape for Thanksgiving! I love putting together tablescapes, I find them really easy to put together because they are smaller projects and don't take a lot of time. Plus I really love dishes, cloth napkins and centerpieces!

I found these awesome wooden chargers at World Market that I just fell in love with and decided to build my table around them. I wanted the table to be pretty neutral but sparkly. You know I love me some sparkle!

Let's break it down;

Mostly everything I already had on hand, I did buy the glittery pumpkins and chargers. The rest I already had in my house so I just went shopping in my supply closet. These plates are Longaberger Collection. Have you ever heard of them? They are well known for their hand crafted baskets, but they have an amazing pottery collection too! My mom bought me these plates a few years ago, I love the weave detail on the edge.

The center of the table is lined with a gorgeous runner from the Everlasting Light collection at DaySpring. The glittery pumpkins and lights are a favorite of mine.

I'm pretty excited to feast at this table in just a few days. Thanksgiving is my Husband's favorite holiday, so I really try to make the day fun and super relaxing for Him! He's kinda a Thanksgiving food snob as well, so he's got lots of request for foods!

What's your favorite Thanksgiving food? Tell me in the comments below your plans for Thanksgiving, do you travel? Have a quiet evening at home? I wanna hear it.

Teaching Our Children to Give Back

It has always been really important for Orion and I to teach our children the importance of giving back, serving and helping others. I truly believe that these principals and values start at home. It's my job to teach my children about these things.

We don't have a lot, but we do have something we can give. There are always ways we can help others. There are always ways we can serve other people.

Since it's nearing the holiday season of Christmas I wanted to share with you ways that we are teaching our children to give back. Since Ava has been a baby we've been buying gifts for children who might not otherwise have a Christmas. My husband's work has an angel tree that we've participated in before, our church now supports a local foster home and the children there.

We always pick two children to give to, even before we had two kids we did. The first couple years Ava had no idea why we were doing what we were doing. Last year was the first year she got it, and she didn't fully understand why we were giving gifts to others. There were some tears about not keeping the toys. This year she's 4 now, and she really gets it. We were able to explain it to her, and she got really excited about giving to these children.

Every Friday night we have "family night" so last Friday night we took our kids to Target and let them shop for the kids on our list. Ava had a lot of fun shopping for the little girl we choose. We came home and had a little wrap party with our gifts and talked again about why we were doing this.

After we were done we took the opportunity to pray for these kids, and pray for the gifts were were going to give them. That they would feel loved this Christmas season.

This is one of my favorite things we do as a family. As a family we are heavily involved in our local church and are always using this an an opportunity to teach our children to serve. They help us at church, they see us cleaning up and serving there. Ava loves jumping in an helping us with things and it's such a joy to see her loving being at church and helping others.

What ways do you teach your children about giving back and serving others? I'd love for you to share your thoughts in the comments below.

5 Ways to Keep Date Nights Affordable.

Do you love date night?

Good, me too!

My husband and I love date night, to be honest with you when we were first married sans kiddos we had date night once a week, every week. Then kids came along, and we didn't have much of a budget like we did in our early on in our marriage and date night kinda fell to the wayside.

But in the last couple years we've really realized how important and vital regular date nights are. So we've made it a priority to spend quality time together and make it affordable too. I wanted to share with you how we try to make date night as affordable as possible to that it's no excuse not to have one.

So here we go, let's jump in.

01// Find a FREE baby sitter.

If you're like us we don't live near family at all, so using family as a baby sitter wasn't an option for the longest time. Since we couldn't rely on family we did the next best thing and we swapped baby sitting with friends. We had friends who had small kiddos of their own and we'd take turns watching each other's kids when we wanted to go out on a date night. They'd go one week and we'd go the next. It was an awesome arrangement and we never felt bad for not paying them since we swapped duties so each couple could have a date night. This is a great option if you don't have family living near by.

02// Split Meals.

The portions in most restaurants are crazy HUGE and more than we ever need to each. Stay on budget by splitting a meal together and splurging on drinks and desserts!

03// Use coupons & deals.

We are not above using a Groupon for date night, or another deal we've found online or in the paper. We often get circular ads in the mail and I always search those too, because we've tried quite a few new restaurants using those deals. Groupon is also another fave because we can do fun things for a great price.

04// Have a date night at home.

Save on gas by staying home. Order your favorite take-out put the kids to bed and hang out. This can be anything you want to do at home.

05// Every once in a while do something that's totally free and costs nothing.

After all the point is to spend quality time together not about about the amount you spent to do so. Go on a walk together and chat, or play those board games you never play and make a fun night together at home.
